How Humid Does it Get By Location?
This map shows you how humid each United States location is. More specifically, when a place gets humid, how humid does it get? The darker color is less humid and the lighter color is more humid. The coloration is normalized using US data. You can mouse over each dot to see a given location’s data.
This map uses dew point instead of relative humidity. Relative humidity is an incredibly misleading way to assess the amount of moisture in the air - if you’d like to hear why, check out my dehumidification video on Youtube.
Let’s quickly review the dew point scale. 30 Fahrenheit is very dry, 40 is dry, 50 is comfortable, 60 is a little bit humid, 70 is oppressively humid, 80+ is inhumane. Each location on the map shows what is called the 1% dew point, which represents the OUTDOOR dew point exceeded during the most humid 1% of hours in a year.
How did I make these maps? First, I gathered and organized a massive amount of data from various sources, then used Python to analyze the data, then Folium to create interactive maps.
This map uses data from ASHRAE’s climatic design conditions from 2021, the latest set, from https://ashrae-meteo.info/v2.0/. It has averages of 30 years of data for over 9,000 locations around the world.
